Cytotoxicity of the crude extracts of Marine ascidians (Tunicata: Ascidiacea) from Tuticorin, Southeast coast of India

چکیده
Marine organisms such as ascidians, sponges and soft corals, containing symbiotic microorganisms are a rich source of bioactive compounds. This study examined the cytotoxic potential of two ascidians found in the coastal waters of Tuticorin. The ascidians samples Didemnum psammatode and Phallusia arabica were extracted in methanol and ethanol. The crude extracts were tested for cytotoxicity using the brine shrimp lethality assay. The crude methanol extract of compound ascidian indicated the highest activity with LC50 value of (106.965 μg/ml) and the ethanol extract of simple ascidian showed the lowest activity with LC50 value of (227.055 μg/ml). Further studies are necessary for a better characterization of the active principles of these extracts and a possible elucidation of the mechanisms of action.

The antibacterial compounds were screened to evaluate antibacterial activity in and different solvent like ...
متن کاملIdentification of Ascidians (Tunicata: Ascidiacea) around Larak Island in the Persian Gulf
Despite the variety of marine organisms recorded from the Persian Gulf, acidians located along the Persian Gulf have not received much attention. We collected Ascidian samples from four sites along Larak Island (Persian Gulf) using Scuba diving and snorkeling at a depth that ranged from 5-15 m. Taxonomic identification was carried out by authoritative keys and texts. We found 4 species that be...
متن کاملNew distributional data on ascidian fauna (Tunicata: Ascidiacea) from Mandapam coast, Gulf of Mannar, India
BACKGROUND Ascidians play a key role in the ecology and biodiversity of marine ecosystem. Ascidians can be transported in ship ballast water and while attached to ship and boat hulls. Heavy traffic by domestic and international ships as well as cargo vessels between the major and minor ports warrants continuous monitoring for new introductions of ascidians. The Mandapam coast is situated in the...
متن کاملNew species of Didemnidae (Tunicata: Ascidiacea) from the tropical coast of Brazil.
The family Didemnidae includes 20% of all known ascidians with six genera in the Atlantic. Here, we describe five new species in the Didemnidae from central coastal Brazil. Four species are in the genus Didemnum and were found in Bahia (D. aurantium, D. flammacolor, D. lambertae, D. longigaster), while one Diplosoma (D. citrinum) was found both in Bahia and Espírito Santo.

The penguin wing oyster Pteria penguin whole body extract was obtained with different solvents. The whole body extracts were assayed for antibacterial activity using agar well diffusion technique against human pathogens. The extracts derived from acetone and chloroform exhibited broad antibacterial activity. Highest activity was exhibited against Klebsiella pneumoniae (6 mm) and Staphylococcus ...
